I am humbled and honoured to have been nominated and elected as the President of the Sri Lanka Sports Medicine Association in January 2018. I am proud to be able to serve in this prestigious association and like to thank our membership for giving me this opportunity.

Sports Medicine in Sri Lanka has come a very long way from its infancy and it is currently at a level where we now have our own MD program in Sports and Exercise Medicine. This has become a reality due to the commitment and tireless work done by our seniors. I take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. C. Thurairaja, Professor Rohan Jayasekara, Dr. Lalith Wijayaratne, Dr. B.J.C Perera, Dr. H.J. Suraweera, Dr. Haridhu Wijesinghe and Professor Aranjan Karunanayake for all the valuable work done for the betterment of Sports and Exercise Medicine in Sri Lanka.

As the president of this association I hope to continue with this upward progression and take Sports and Exercise Medicine in Sri Lanka to a level where all of us can be even more proud of. Our goal is to provide high quality care to competitive sportsmen and sportswomen, recreational athletes, all stakeholders involved in sports and to the general population as a whole and thereby contribute towards better healthcare in Sri Lanka.

The main event for this year is the 4th Scientific Sessions of the Sri Lanka Sports Medicine Association held in collaboration with the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka, under the theme “Exercise is Medicine Exercise is Wellness”. It is with great pleasure that I invite you to this event which will be held from 24 to 26 November 2018 at the “Olympic House” National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka, Colombo 7. Physical inactivity is a major public health hazard today, with an increasing trend of inactivity related diseases or Non Communicable diseases . “Exercise is Medicine Exercise is Wellness” the theme of this year, is to highlight and create awareness of the importance of exercise, proper nutrition and active lifestyle in both prevention and treatment of diseases, especially the Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs).

The Sri Lanka Sports Medicine Association hopes to collaborate with “Exercise is Medicine” a global movement initiated by the American College of Sports Medicine and officially launch “Exercise is Medicine Sri Lanka” at this year’s inauguration ceremony. I sincerely thank Dr. Upul Madahapola, a Registrar in MD in Sports and Exercise Medicine, for taking the initiative in this endeavour. I am certain that this timely action will positively contribute towards addressing the current public health problem of inactivity related diseases, thereby filling a much needed void in our health care system.

Another milestone this year will be the launching of the much awaited 1st edition of the Sri Lankan Journal of Sports and Exercise Medicine (SJSEM). I am very thankful to our Editor, Dr.Chathuranga Ranasinghe for his tireless effort in making this a reality. The official website of the Sri Lanka Sports Medicine Association has been launched to coincide with the Scientific Sessions this year and I thank Dr. Asela Rathnayake for the work done on the website.

My personal best wishes goes to the newly elected Executive Committee Members and Council members. I kindly request our membership for their fullest corporation, support, guidance and feedback, to work towards the common goal of taking Sports Medicine to the next level in Sri Lanka.
